So you’re daughter is turning 17 and you want to throw her THE party of your dreams but she’s not just up for it?
Quite an awkward stage right?
My recent client and good family friend Doc Jenny knew just how that felt, but she was able to pull off a surprise party for her teen by following these practical tips:
1. Throw a party your daughter (or son) would like.
What does she/ he like? Is she an outdoor kind of girl or is she quiet and reserved? Doc Jenny knew Jermaine to be reserved and shy, plus she wasn’t really fond of parties- so a formal bday program was already out of the window. Instead, she planned for a laidback movie night party, so her daughter can just enjoy eating and watching with her friends.
2. Make sure to give them their space.
When we were planning the party, Doc Jenny made it clear to me that their family will be separated from the teen guests from the start of the party till the end. She wanted to give her daughter and her friends the time to enjoy each others company without the prying eyes of adults, or without having to feel awkward about acting up in front of them. So we had the relatives inside the venue, while the kids were left to themselves for the most of the party.
When Doc Jenny told me about her daughter’s 17th birthday party, she already had a clear vision of how she wanted it to be.
Blue jeans. Laid back movie night. Fun.
She was very much aware of what her teenager wanted, that she already planned how she would carefully divide her chosen venue between family and friends. She knew her daughter very well and it made the rest of the planning so easy for me too.
I love these types of clients who already know what they want- because not only does it make the work easier, it also makes looking for pegs and suppliers faster. We knew who to contact and who to get, and in just a matter of weeks, we booked all that we needed for a party that was four months away.
As for me, it was my first test of throwing a party for teenagers. But I had so much fun doing it because I loved the idea of doing it in a garden first and foremost, and I loved that it would just be laidback and fun- no formal program, and the teens can just chat w/ each other, enjoy the food and watch a movie.
Inspired by Doc Jenny’s ideas for her daughter’s 17th bday, we suggested that a boho chic theme would perfectly go well with the venue in mind and the activities she wanted to do.
Since it was a SURPRISE party, we opt to do a chic E-invite, which we posted in an FB group we created with the celebrant’s friends.
We wanted to give it a truly boho feel- so we went for colored mason jars, colorful gerberas, blue ecuadorian roses for the celebrant and some bronze geometric centerpieces we also used as an instant vase for some of the flowers.
We also made use of banigs and boho mats, plus custom pillows which the guests got one each by the entrance. For the celebrant, we ordered special beautiful pillows from The Olive Tree, which she also took home.
Oh and have I told you how cute our entrance was? It was like a mini wood frame adorned with fresh and faux flowers- complete with a tiffany bike on the side, leading you to a really chic party.
And for the main area- we had a real teepee, which was a sure hit as the teens took turns in taking their photos inside. We had a huge projector screen for the movie night as well, a custom made popcorn cart w/ handcarved name plate and an ice cream cart which got a lot of raves from guests.
For the photo area, we made a huge paper flower of the number 17 which we put by the swing, complete with the name of the celebrant on top plus handmade DIY teepees.
Since it was a surprise, the celebrant also had a surprise for her guests as they were treated to cookie souvenirs which the bday girl baked herself! (Her mom asked her to bake 300 cookies supposedly for her mom’s friends, little did she know it was for her own friends for her surprise bday party!)
Aside from that, each guest also took home a handcrafted dreamcatcher especially made by KimCreates.
The highlight of the night was our fake technical problem excuse in the middle of the movie- so that we can show this beautiful surprise video of messages taken just an hour before the celebrant arrived. It had all the feels!
Here’s a slideshow of just how fun the party was for Jermaine and her friends!
This is what Doc Jenny had to say about Jermaine’s 17th bday!
Thanks a whole bunch for helping me pull off this one if a kind party. Na full na naman hapiness meter ng princess namin. All these despite your very busy schedule at the station and taking care of a sick baby last week. We cannot thank you enough for this we all had a super great time. Looking forward to see this event in your blog. Labor of love talaga!
Oh and before I end this blog- here’s a special shoutout to this venue of a gem that Doc Jenny discovered for this party- Pio’s Kitchen, owned by the very lovely Chef Chin! We super loved the food and the ambiance!
Personally, I really enjoyed planning this party, which I first thought I wouldn’t be able to pull through considering that this is for a teenager! Whew, what a relief when I heard that the family and the teens themselves really had a great time! Here’s to more terrific teen parties for us!
